Acute Myocardial Infarction : A Non-Surgical Treatment Approach

October 21 / 2026

heart attack

'Heart attack' or Acute myocardial infarction occurs when a coronary artery deteriorates and ruptures internally, triggering a blood clot that blocks the artery. This blockage cuts off blood and oxygen supply to the heart muscle, potentially leading to heart failure or sudden cardiac arrest.

Symptoms

  • Chest pain: A common symptom, often felt in the left or center of the chest. It can radiate to the shoulders, shoulder blades, jaw, or down one or both arms. Patients may also experience palpitations and heavy sweating.
  • Shortness of breath: Patients may breathe quickly and shallowly, have limited capacity for physical activity, or become unable to lie flat due to breathlessness. Waking up at night feeling short of breath is also a sign.
  • Swelling: Swelling of the legs and feet.
  • Fainting: Dizziness, lightheadedness, or loss of consciousness.

Treatment Methods

1.  Coronary Angiogram and Balloon Angioplasty

The procedure aims to reopen the blocked artery as quickly as possible. A catheter is inserted into a blood vessel to clear the blockage, improving blood flow to the heart. This restores proper heart function, reducing the risk of death and long-term heart failure.

2.  Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG)

This surgery involves grafting blood vessels from other parts of the body to bypass the blocked coronary artery. This method is used for patients at high risk from angioplasty or those with multiple blockages.

3.  Medication

Regular medication is crucial for reducing mortality risk, preventing re-blockages, and slowing the future progression of artery narrowing.

Recommendations

Heart disease can affect anyone at any age, even young people with no prior symptoms or risks. If you experience any of the symptoms listed above, you should seek immediate medical evaluation. Doctors can perform tests like Electrocardiogram (ECG) or Exercise Stress Test (EST) to quickly detect abnormalities and ensure timely treatment.
