Common Gastrointestinal and Liver Conditions Treated
1. Non-Invasive Radiological Diagnostics (No oral/IV contrast)
Ultrasonography: Such as Ultrasound Upper Abdomen, to examine abnormalities in upper abdominal organs (liver, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts, spleen, kidneys).
Barium Swallowing Study: To assess swallowing, aspiration, esophageal motility, and esophageal abnormalities.
Upper GI Series: To evaluate swallowing, esophagus, entire stomach, and duodenum.
Long GI Series: To evaluate swallowing, entire stomach, and small intestine, checking for inflammation and other abnormalities.
Barium Enema (BE): To examine large intestine abnormalities.
Computerized Tomography (Spiral CT Scan) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).
3. GI Endoscopy (for diagnosis and treatment)
Gastroscopy: Endoscopic examination of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum for diagnosis.
Colonoscopy: Endoscopic examination of the large intestine for diagnosis and treatment.
Sigmoidoscopy: Endoscopic examination of the lower large intestine for diagnosis and treatment.
Polypectomy: Endoscopic removal of small polyps in the stomach, large intestine, or duodenum.
EVS, EVL (Endoscopic Variceal Treatment): Endoscopic treatment of esophageal varices by injection or banding.
PEG (Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy): Endoscopic placement of a feeding tube into the stomach through the abdominal wall, avoiding surgery.
Diagnostic ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography): Endoscopic diagnosis and treatment of biliary and pancreatic duct system diseases (e.g., bile duct stones, bile duct cancer, chronic pancreatitis), avoiding surgery.
Therapeutic ERCP (Sphincterotomy, Stone Extraction): Endoscopic treatment of biliary conditions, such as bile duct cancer and gallstones.
TOCE (Transcatheter Oily Chemo-embolization): Used when liver tumors are too large for surgical removal. A radiologist inserts a microcatheter into the hepatic artery directly to the tumor, delivering chemotherapy and embolizing the primary blood supply to the tumor to prolong survival. In some cases, if the tumor shrinks and does not metastasize, surgical removal may then be possible.
FNA (Fine Needle Aspiration) and Liver Biopsy: Aspiration and biopsy of liver tissue and cells for analysis in cases of suspected liver cancer or inflammation.
Urea Breath Test (UBT): To detect Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection, a common cause of peptic ulcers and stomach cancer. This is a non-invasive breath test measuring 13C.
