Deep Inspiration Breath Hold (DIBH) is a technique where patients take a deep breath and hold it for a specific duration during radiation therapy. This deep inhalation displaces the heart away from the breast, significantly reducing the radiation dose it receives.

The Role of Catalyst+ HD in DIBH

Catalyst+ HD utilizes 3D Surface Imaging to monitor the patient's body position in real time. It accurately detects changes in body position and breathing patterns, ensuring the patient maintains the optimal position during the breath hold—a critical element of DIBH.

Advantages of DIBH with Catalyst+ HD

  • Reduced Cardiac Radiation Dose: Deep inspiration increases the distance between the heart and the left breast, mitigating the long-term risk of heart disease.
  • Enhanced Accuracy: The Catalyst+ HD system continuously tracks patient movement, ensuring precise alignment of the radiation beam with the treatment plan.
  • Minimized Side Effects: Reducing radiation exposure to the lungs and heart lowers both short-term and long-term side effects.

DIBH and Catalyst+ HD Radiotherapy Procedure

1.  Simulation Day

During the CT scan, staff will guide the patient through deep breathing and breath-holding exercises. Catalyst+ HD creates a 3D surface image of the patient's body and records the optimal breath-hold position.

2.  Treatment Day

During radiation delivery, Catalyst+ HD continuously monitors the patient's surface position. It alerts if the patient cannot maintain the breath-hold position. If the patient's position changes, the system automatically pauses radiation and resumes only when the patient returns to the appropriate range, eliminating the need to restart the entire treatment.

DIBH Radiotherapy: Improving Patient Lives

DIBH is an effective and safe radiotherapy method for breast cancer patients, particularly for left-sided cases. The integration of Catalyst+ HD enhances accuracy, reduces side effects, and instills confidence in the treatment process. Patients should consult a specialist physician to determine the suitability of this technique for their treatment plan.
