Respiratory-Gated Radiotherapy precisely targets tumors in the chest and abdomen, such as lung tumors, by synchronizing radiation delivery with the patient's breathing cycle. This ensures radiation is administered only when the tumor is in the optimal position. For patient safety, the system automatically pauses radiation if there's an interruption, like a cough or sneeze.
Precise radiation delivery that consistently covers the lung tumor throughout the breathing cycle enhances the effectiveness of cancer cell elimination and tumor control.
The radiation field precisely adapts to tumor movement, detected by SGRT, as the patient breathes, thereby optimizing treatment.
By utilizing 4DCT imaging to track tumor movement during respiration, there's no need to unnecessarily expand the radiation field. This reduces the radiation dose to healthy organs like the lungs, heart, or esophagus, minimizing potential side effects.
The continuous monitoring of skin and breathing ensures that if a patient coughs or sneezes, the machine temporarily stops. Radiation resumes only when the patient returns to the planned treatment position, allowing for normal breathing and reducing stress during treatment.
In essence, Respiratory-Gated Radiotherapy boosts the efficacy of cancer cell treatment, improves tumor control, and significantly reduces side effects and unnecessary radiation exposure.
